Enter information below about the companes that are tracking you online:

Company #1: Amazon/Rubicon ProjectEdit

Company Name: [Rubicon Project]

To the best of our understanding, this company engages in the following business: it is a large online-advertising firm which interacts with over 100,000 advertisers, and does180 billion ad trades per month. Their masssive reach, is  96.7% of the entire U.S. internet audience.  Their purpose is to gather information by tracking internet user’s habits and then selling it to companies to advertise to consumers.  This allows the businesses to gain a greater uderstanding of their buyers needs, and thus advertise more directly to them.

One good thing about this company's privacy policy [Rubicon Project Privacy Policy] is that:  they do not collect PII (personally identifiable information), nor do they share non-PII, provided about consumers, to anyone but the advertisers they work with.

One bad thing about this company's privacy policy is that:  the website says they cannot guarantee the transmission of information, will be secure.  So even if the company is taking proper precautions, personal information can still be at risk.

Company #2: iheartradio/Scorecard ResearchEdit

Company Name:Scorecard Research

To the best of our understanding, this company engages in the following business:

Scorecard is a global demographic research company that looks at user profiles to assist companies in advertising their products to potential consumers.  They collect data through surveys and tagging. This information suggests links to other sites that a user might be interested in clicking on. Their clientele cosists of online and local radio stations such as: iheardradio, 99.1 KGGI, 102.7 Kiss FM and people of all ages around the world who have access to the internet.

One good thing about this company's privacy policy (Privacy Policy) is that:

It provides what they call "browser level measure" which allows the tracking of new versus frequent users.  Due to the nature of society becoming more laxed this privacy tool is essential to bringing sites that seem interesting to the user as opposed to the user having to go out and search for it.

One bad thing about this company's privacy policy is that:

Their legal guideleines to the policy are too long. Not only that, the user has to agree to the privacy policy before they are allowed access to the site. So users agree to something that they most likely never read or have knowledge of what they agreed to.

Company #3: Footlocker/CoremetricsEdit

Company Name Coremetrics

To the best of our understanding, this company engages in the following business:

Coremetrics is a partner of Enterprise Marketing Management (EMM) and IBM and strives to find out what consumers are interested in, and to become more engaged with the consumer. With over 2,500 organizations using IBM as a source for customer research provides the capability of cross channel marketing which creates a profile based on the consumer's past and current behavior. This information is provided to companies like Footlocker to bring material to a potential consumer that fits the demographic of the ideal Nike lover.

One good thing about this company's privacy policy ( Privacy Policy) is that:

They use some of the information a consumer provides to send out company satisfaction surveys. This is good because it allows for the consumer to have a voice in what they like about a company and what the company can improve on. Thus, through these surveys with information provided by the customer, a company can provide the best experience possible.

One bad thing about this company's privacy policy is that:

It clearly states, "We may combine information we collect from you with information we obtained from other sources..." This is bad because the company does not state what other "sources" have our information. In a way they are not telling us that collusion exists. Every site we click on has something else tracking where we go and what we're going to click on next. By not stating what other sources may have our information can be risky for the consumer.
